Helping Your New Teeth Stick: How to Use Denture Adhesive
July 11, 2024
While dentures can use suction to stay in your mouth, they sometimes need extra support. That’s why special adhesives exist – these products help secure your prosthetic teeth. Still, it isn’t always clear how patients should use this tool; you may not know where to start. The good news is that your local Landrum dentist can offer some helpful guidance. So, here’s a primer on how to use denture adhesive to make your new teeth work better.
When Should You Use Denture Adhesive?
Dentures don’t always need an adhesive to stay secure, but you should look for signs that the product would help. These include:
- You Have a Dry Mouth: Older patients and those who take certain medications can suffer from dry mouth. Luckily, denture adhesive fixes adhesion problems that stem from this dryness.
- You Want More Security: If your denture feels loose or wobbly, it can lower your confidence. An adhesive would improve its security and give you a sense of comfort.
- You Often Strain Your Face: A denture adhesive can help patients who often put a strain on their face. In particular, it’d ensure stronger adhesion for singers, teachers, athletes, speakers, etc.
How Should You Apply It?
It usually isn’t too much trouble to apply a denture adhesive. All in all, you can proceed once you’ve confirmed your dentures are clean.
You should apply the adhesive in a particular way to make it effective. As such, follow the instructions listed on the product’s packaging. You could also apply it in short strips away from the edges if no directions are available; this approach prevents oozing.
Once you’ve applied the adhesive, carefully position your dentures and hold them in place for a few seconds. They’ll then have a secure fit in your mouth.
How Do You Remove It?
To avoid mishaps, you need to loosen the adhesive before you remove it. That means you should repeatedly gargle with salt water for 30-second periods. After a few rounds, much of the cream will have washed from between your dentures and gums.
The actual removal of the dentures also takes extra care. First, loosen the restorations with a back-and-forth motion and release the top and bottom in succession. You can then rinse both arches with lukewarm water and brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Lastly, soak the dentures in the appropriate cleaning solution.
Your full smile will feel even better when you know how to use denture adhesive. Given that fact, memorize the facts above and ask your dentist for any extra guidance!
