How Dental Insurance Works

Every dental insurance plan comes with its own set of coverage levels, fees, stipulations, and other details. It is important that you set aside a bit of time to get to know how your unique policy works. In the meantime, you can gain a basic understanding of how most standard PPO plans work by reviewing the information below:

  • Preventive care is often up to 100% covered.
  • Basic services may be around 70 – 80% covered.
  • Major treatments are frequently around 50% covered.
  • Coverage can vary greatly for advanced services like dental implants and orthodontia.
  • Cosmetic treatments are typically not covered unless they come with substantial oral health benefits.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Medical and dental insurance have different areas of focus. Your health plan is designed to support your systemic wellness, so it covers things like physicals, emergency room visits, and management of various acute and chronic conditions. Medical insurance does not usually cover routine dental services, such as checkups, cleanings, crowns, and fillings. Dental insurance, on the other hand, does apply to such things. It is all about keeping your teeth and gums in good shape.

In certain cases, there is a degree of overlap between medical and dental insurance. For example, they might both apply to some types of oral surgery.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Whether our practice is in your insurance network or not, we would love to welcome you as a patient! We can file claims for all PPO plans.

In-Network Coverage

If we are in-network with a plan, it means we have a contract with the insurance company that manages prices and encourages a certain standard of care. In most cases, out-of-pocket fees are lowest at in-network practices.

At Parkside Dental, we are proud to be in-network with:

  • Delta Dental
  • Cigna
  • Aetna
  • And many more

We welcome and accept all PPO plans, so give us a call to find out if we are in-network with your insurance.

Out-of-Network

If you have a PPO plan that we are not in-network with, we still warmly invite you to visit us. We can file claims on your behalf, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the benefits that you are still able to enjoy. Remember, insurance network status is not the most important factor to consider when you are choosing a dentist. Rather, you should focus on finding a dental team who is worthy of your trust.
